6 ways to support small businesses

Find out how you can support small businesses in your area, and why it's important to do so, and how it can benefit you.

As a small web design company ourselves, we love our small local businesses. Here in the black country they are the heart of the community, and can only thrive if locals make full use of them.

Why is it important to support local businesses?

Honestly, the reasons are self-evident. Small businesses make up a large portion of the local and national economy, create jobs, and strengthen the areas they are in.

The best benefits are for you. You'll likely find something unique and original. A small business is going to do things in their own way, so will end up creating something original that you won't find elsewhere.

Small business owners and staff will be dedicated to what they do. As a result you can expect a better service because they are relying on your custom to succeed.

Six great ways to support small businesses

It's not always obvious what you can do to help support small businesses. So here's a short list of a few things you can do to support your local businesses.

Shop local

I know, I know. It's obvious. Shop local. Give your custom to local, independent shops instead of chains and massive global companies. Many local shops now offer online services, so you can support them online as well as popping in store.

Local shops can't cover everything you need, in which case you have to go to bigger shops. Instead of heading straight to a massive online marketplace, try and find the same product elsewhere. A lot of companies will have their own website, often with the same products at the same price. Ordering direct means they won't have to pay the fees associated with being listed on a marketplace.

Write a positive review

It costs you nothing to leave a review on Trustpilot, TripAdvisor, Google, or social media and takes only a few minutes of your time. But, the benefit to a business is huge. Positive reviews from real customers like yourself helps build confidence in the business and in turn will attract more customers.

Send feedback

On the other hand, in the unlikely event you aren't happy with their service or product, send them an email and let them know. It might be a problem they don't know about, and any constructive criticism you have will be greatly appreciated.

Use local services

Instead of using a national chain or travelling, try and make the most of your local area. Choose to visit local attractions, or use local trades. You will be surprised at the quality you might find a stone's throw away from your front door.

Follow and share

Following on social media channels, and sharing their content is a great way to support a small business. Word of mouth has always been one of the most valuable ways a business can gain the trust of potential new customers. A small gesture, such as liking a post, can go a long way in getting that word out about the business.

Post a picture

As we've mentioned, small businesses need to build a relationship based on trust with potential new customers. One of the best ways you can share your experience with a service or product is to post a photo alongside a review.

Sometimes we can be wary of trying new things, so being able to see real customer photos will help attract new customers.

Other ways you can offer support

There are a lot of ways to support small businesses, many of which are free, all of which a really easy to do. We need to choose local business. We need to encourage others to choose local business.

Other ways you can help include:

  • Buy vouchers or gift cards to give to friends and family as presents
  • Order from that new takeaway you've had your eye on
  • Try the local craft beer when you on a night out
  • Avoid last minute cancellations, that restaurant table could go empty
  • Not only will you help the business grow, but you will discover some amazing products and services as you do.
